There is a great shortage of text books in Tanzanian schools and this holds back the attainment of the children. At the Mayega Children’s Centre we want the children to develop a study habit.  We purchased the basic text books needed at primary and secondary level . Its a small start but we hope to gradually build up a stock of books .  They cost the equivalent of £3 to £5 each but that is beyond the reach of most families. Thank you to our fundraisers who made this happen.

Shopping for suitcases to carry everything needed for life at college. Every family in the UK with a new student knows how expensive it can be. In Tanzania kids don’t just take their clothes and  bedding; also needed is a mattress, a mosquito net, a bucket, a hoe, a large blade for cutting grass, their own crockery and cutlery. It’s an expensive time and with no family to help them Busega Scotland is providing our Mayega leavers with all their basic needs. The 5 boys will spend three years training as motor mechanics and learning core subjects including Maths, Technical Drawing and English at Kalwande College, in Misungwi District about 25 miles from Mwanza.  If you would like to help us invest in their future by making a monthly donation towards the Moving On project then please contact us .

Mr  Nethanel Levi  is the new security guard at Mayega Children’s Centre. He is from Mayega village and the secretary of the local African Inland Church. He was selected for the post with help from local village officials who know him well. It gets cold at night during the rainy season and Mr Levi needs a rain jacket to keep warm. Solar power provides security lighting in the immediate vicinity of the centre but a torch is essential work equipment. We welcome Mr Levi to the Mayega team.

Thanks to the Moray craft ladies for support in donating wool, the Mayega children  have learned basic crochet. They  were feeling the cold. The temperature drops during the rainy season and so everyone wanted to make a hat!

Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket for our Christmas Quilt Raffle. £270 was raised for Busega Scotland. A huge thank you to Ruth for making the quilt and organising the raffle.

The latest quiz night in the Drouthie Cobbler was great fun . The Africa question round had the teams scratching their heads trying to find answers. Mike our Quiz Master had to deal with some good natured heckling . We are already being asked when the next Quiz Night will be! Thank you to everyone who supported the event so generously in time and money.  The funds raised will be used to provide leaving care support. We are currently exploring skills training options and colleges for the six young people who will soon be ready to leave the orphanage. Well done to the winning team ” Three Scots and an Irishman”.

“One more step along the road I go”

Jane, Enosi, Dotto, George, Hassan and Geoffrey celebrated their last day at Kalemela Secondary School today. Supported by  Rev Gadlord Deuli, Leah (Matron) and Peter (Patron) from Mayega Children’s Centre they joined their classmates for a farewell gathering.  The young people have received support throughout their secondary education from the WAZA  Project in Canada. They have provided school uniforms and school fees .

The young people will return to sit their Form Four exams in November after the national elections on 25th October. We wish them well as they continue to study and hope they will be able to do their best during the exams. They face an uncertain future but Busega Scotland’s Moving On project will continue to offer practical support and guidance.

Ester says thank you to Busega Scotland for her new glasses. She is happy to have them so that she can read the blackboard at Mwanza Polytechnic where she is studying to be an early years teacher. Many people in Tanzania cannot afford to buy glasses.
